A comfortable guest room at YUVi Blue Maldives, featuring elegant decor and a view of palm trees outside.

When people think of the Maldives, luxury overwater villas and eye-watering price tags often come to mind. But what if I told you there’s a way to experience the magic of this island paradise without breaking the bank? Enter YUVi Blue Maldives & Spa – a charming guesthouse on Himmafushi Island that’s redefining what it means to have an authentic Maldivian getaway.

I’m excited to share this gem with you today because it ticks all the right boxes: stunning location, comfortable accommodations, incredible activities, and best of all, it won’t leave your wallet crying. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a family adventure, or a solo surf trip, YUVi Blue might just be your perfect match.

Why Himmafushi Island Should Be on Your Radar

Let’s talk location first. Himmafushi Island sits just 16 kilometers from Malé and a stone’s throw from Velana International Airport. This means you can go from plane to paradise in no time – no lengthy speedboat transfers or seaplane rides required (though those are fun too!). For travelers on a budget or those who just want to maximize their island time, this proximity is pure gold.

A giant sign of Himmafushi welcomes you upon arriving at the island.

But don’t let the convenience fool you into thinking Himmafushi is some overdeveloped tourist trap. This island has managed to maintain its authentic local charm while welcoming visitors with open arms. With a population of just over 2,000 friendly locals, you’ll get a real taste of Maldivian culture and hospitality that’s often missing from the more isolated resort islands.

Enjoying the fresh air and sunny weather on my holiday at this charming little island.

The island itself is delightfully walkable – just 900 meters long and 750 meters wide. Everything you need is within a few minutes’ stroll, from the local park (2 minutes) to the health center (2 minutes) and the gorgeous Bikini Beach (just 1 minute away!). There’s even a floating bar just 2 minutes from the island – talk about unique experiences!

What Makes YUVi Blue Special

YUVi Blue Maldives isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s not pretending to be a five-star resort, and that’s exactly what makes it special. Instead, it offers thoughtfully designed accommodations that blend comfort, culture, and adventure in perfect harmony.

Yuvi Blue and Spa: a charming guesthouse at the heart of Himmafushi Island, Maldives.

The property features 17 rooms total, divided into two main categories:

Yuvi Deluxe Twin or Yuvi Double Rooms (14 rooms): Perfect for couples or friends traveling together, these rooms come with either one king bed or two single beds. They comfortably accommodate two adults plus one child under two years (who stays free – bonus for young families!).

Yuvi Family Room or Deluxe Triple Room (3 rooms): Ideal for families or small groups, these larger rooms feature either three single beds or one king bed plus one single bed. They can accommodate up to three adults plus one child under two.

Yuvi Blue Family Room

Every room comes loaded with amenities that show YUVi Blue cares about your comfort: Smart TV for downtime, complimentary WiFi to share those envy-inducing beach photos, tea and coffee facilities for early risers, a mini bar, hair dryer, slippers, and even an iron and ironing board. There’s also complimentary filtered water (stay hydrated in that tropical heat!), a balcony to soak in those island views, and a study area if you need to sneak in a bit of work.

The attention to detail extends to the little things – drying racks for your beach gear, wardrobe space, and towels that actually feel fresh and clean. It’s these thoughtful touches that transform a good stay into a great one.

Dining That Actually Excites

One of my pet peeves about some guesthouses is when they treat meals as an afterthought. Not here! YUVi Blue features an in-house multi-cuisine restaurant called Blue Restaurant, where you can explore flavors from around the world while also diving into authentic Maldivian dishes. They serve plenty of delicious food choices for breakfast. It was the best meal everyday for me.

You’ve got three meal plan options to choose from:

  • Bed & Breakfast (BB): Start each day with a hearty buffet or à la carte breakfast featuring both local and international options.
  • Half Board (HB): Includes breakfast plus either lunch or dinner, giving you flexibility to explore local eateries or simply enjoy the convenience of dining in.
  • Full Board (FB): The ultimate hassle-free option with breakfast, lunch, and dinner all included.

And here’s a fun bonus – there’s also an in-house juice bar called Blue Bar. Perfect for those afternoon refreshers when you need something cold and fruity after a morning in the sun.

Entertainment-wise, YUVi Blue brings the culture to you with live music and traditional Bodu Beru performances (scheduled, so ask when you book!). There’s also a terrace with lounging space where you can chill with fellow travelers, swap stories, and watch the sunset paint the sky in impossible shades of orange and pink.

Adventure Awaits: Activities and Excursions

Now, this is where YUVi Blue really shines. The excursion list reads like an adventure lover’s dream diary, and they can create customized packages based on what gets your heart racing.

For Water Babies: Snorkeling trips to multiple points, sandbank visits with lunch on the sand (yes, really!), dolphin watching, turtle trips, and even the chance to snorkel with sharks for the brave souls among you.

For Surf Enthusiasts: Himmafushi is literally famous for its surf breaks. Jailbreaks – one of the Maldives’ premier surf spots – is just a short paddle from the island. This renowned right-hander features three distinct peaks that can unite under optimal conditions for an absolutely epic ride. Then there’s Sultans, known for its consistency and reliability, and Honkys, a fun left-hander perfect for goofy-footers. The property offers surfing sessions and fins and mask rentals to get you started.

For Romantics: How about a candlelit beach dinner for two? Yes, please!

For the Curious: Island hopping tours to Hura and Thulusdhoo, day trips to nearby resorts, night fishing with drinks, and fishing trips with BBQ.

Honestly, the hardest part will be choosing which adventures to squeeze into your stay. My advice? Stay longer than you think you need to!

The Surf Scene Deserves Its Own Spotlight

Two men sitting on white chairs under a tree by the beach, with surfboards stacked nearby and a blue umbrella overhead.
Two surfers relaxing on the beach in Himmafushi, surrounded by surfboards and enjoying the picturesque view of the turquoise ocean.

Let me geek out about the surfing for a moment because if you’re even remotely interested in catching waves, Himmafushi is calling your name.

Jailbreaks isn’t just good – it’s legendary. This famous right-hander attracts surfers from across the globe who come specifically for its consistent, powerful waves. Picture yourself paddling out over crystal-clear turquoise water, the reef beneath you teeming with colorful fish, and then dropping into a wave that seems to go on forever.

Sultans and Honkys offer equally thrilling experiences, and the Maldives has even more breaks to explore: Cokes, Chickens, Ninjas, and others, each with its own personality and challenges. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner ready to learn, YUVi Blue can help you access these world-class spots.

Practical Perks

For those traveling for business or groups, there’s even a meeting room that accommodates 10-12 guests. The property also features a private beach area and easy access to the jetty (4-minute walk) for all your boating adventures.

Why You Should Book Through Me

Here’s the thing: YUVi Blue Maldives & Spa offers incredible value for money in one of the world’s most beautiful destinations. You get comfort without the resort price tag, adventure without the hassle of planning everything yourself, and authentic culture without feeling like a tourist.

The Maldives is a tiny country consisting of little islands. It is located in the Indian Ocean south-west of Sri Lanka and India. This paradise island country is a famous holiday destination for many tourists all around the world because of its fine white sand beaches and crystal clear blue waters. The capital city is Male which is the central commercial hub of Maldives. It is a busy city full of tall buildings, offices, and retail outlets. The main religion is Islam. Shops and offices are closed during prayer times.

Do you want to work in Maldives? This country has a lot of job opportunities for Filipinos. Employers like to hire Filipino because Filipinos are generally well-educated, smart, honest, and hardworking. Another reason is Filipinos are generally fluent in English.

There are two ways to apply for a job in Maldives. One way is you apply thru an employment agency in the Philippines. This route is easy because you don’t have to search for a job. The agency will match your qualification and will find a job for you in Maldives. They will be the one to process your documents. The downside is you are going to wait until when they are going to finish processing your documents. They are going to deduct from your salary the expenses they have paid in processing your papers. The other way is applying directly to a company or resort in Maldives and processing your documents here in the Philippines by yourself. This is called direct hired which I have done that’s why I am now working here in Maldives. This is a costly way. Be prepared for a big amount of money but you can quicken the processing of your papers because you are the one doing it by yourself.

How to Apply Directly to a Company in the Maldives

This is my fourth time working in the Maldives but it is my first time working here as a documented Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), meaning I processed my documents thru POEA and I have an Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC). Interested in how it works? Read on…

To start with, of course, you have to find a job online. I recommend you start searching at https://www.job-maldives.com/. You can also join LinkedIn and search for a job there. Another way is to join a Facebook group of Filipinos working in Maldives called “Filipinos in Maldives”. This is a private group so you have to get approved first by the admin before you can join. You can find a lot of jobs posted in this Facebook group. Aside from this, if you have a friend who is already working in Maldives, you can ask him or her for a job referral or recommendation. If you are already a member of the Facebook group Filipinos in Maldives, you can post there that you need a job and write your qualifications and experience. There are more than four thousand members in this group. Many of them can see your post and may help you find a job thru recommendation or referral.

Finding a job in the Maldives is hard especially during this pandemic. Many companies have temporarily closed or shut down due to this crisis. Employers in the Maldives, prioritize to hire the locals. Aside from this, most employers prefer foreign applicants who are already in the Maldives because it is easier for them to hire employees this way. Nevertheless, don’t get discouraged. I started applying in January 2020 and found a job after more than one month but they canceled the hiring because of the Covid-19 crisis. I did not give up. When I went back to the Philippines in June 2020, I started to apply for a job again until I found one in September of the same year.

Primarily you got to have an email where you send your application, resume, and other documents to the company. Then, you got to install Whatsapp and Skype on your mobile phone. Most employers use Whatsapp as a means of communication. They will call or interview you thru Whatsapp or Skype so you better be prepared and always keep your line open.

If you apply to a resort, your salary is big and you will receive a service charge so your total monthly salary is high. If you apply to a company in Male City or Hulhumale expect that they only give a low salary. If you want my personal opinion, it is better than working in the Philippines.  Make sure they will provide your free accommodation and free food allowance. I got a job as the Marketing and Business Development Manager of a trading company in Male City. I lowered my salary expectations so I got the job. The important thing is that the company that will hire you should process all the employment documents needed for your POEA processing.

Processing your Work Documents as a Direct Hired Employee

Once you are hired by a company or resort in Maldives and discussed with you about your job duties, responsibilities, salary, etc, they will email you an Offer Letter. This document will be the basis for them to make your employment contract. The offer letter contains the terms and conditions of your employment which includes your job description, salary, other remuneration, service charge or commissions, working hours, leave, probationary period, and the length of your contract. Once you agree to the offer letter, then you sign it, print, scan and email it back to them. Then they will make an Employment Contract and email it to you. If you are satisfied with the Employment Contract, you sign it and send it back to them thru email. They will also ask you to email your passport copy and passport size photo. Then they will process your work permit for your visa. It may take 5 to 7 days to process your work visa. After the processing of your work permit, they will email a copy to you. Then that is the time they are going to process the necessary documents for your document sealed attestation at the Philippine Consulate (it was previously called red ribbon). You have to tell the HR that they have to submit the following documents to the Philippine Consulate:

  • Employment Approval (Work Permit)
  • Employment Contract
  • Registration copy of the company
  • Your passport copy

Employment approval (work permit) should be attested from the Ministry of Economic Development (the HR of the company will be the one to do this). All documents should be attested by a lawyer except the passport copy (the HR will be the one to process all of this). The regular service fee is $25. The processing period may take a maximum of 7 days. The company will pay for the processing fee.

When the processing is finished, tell them to send all the original documents to you via DHL or any reliable international courier. You need to give them your correct complete address so that they can send it to you. It may take 10 to 15 days for the parcel to arrive. Recommend DHL to the company. It is faster and reliable.

A big smile upon receiving my original documents from the Maldives

When you received the documents, go to the office of POEA and ask for the checklist for direct hire. They will give you the checklist where you can see the other required documents to process your OEC. There are two phases of this process. Phase one includes the following documents:

  • Passport and photocopy of your passport
  • Employment Approval (Work Permit)
  • Employment Contract
  • Registration copy of the company
  • Attestation from the Philippine Consulate (the paper with the seal)
  • A certified true copy of your Transcript of Records
  • Diploma
  • Resume
  • Certificate of employment from previous jobs

After you have submitted all the required documents for phase one, you have to wait for a maximum of 15 days to receive a POEA clearance for the ban on Direct Hired. You have to call the POEA office to follow-up from time to time before you go to their office. Once they informed you that you already have the clearance, then you go to their office to get your documents and they will tell you to do the requirements for phase two of the processing. This includes:

  • E-Registration (done online on POEA website)
  • PEOS (done online on POEA website)
  • PDOS (needs to have an appointment first at OWWA)
  • Medical
  • Insurance from a private insurance company (preferably Paramount Insurance)
  • Payment of OWWA fee
  • Payment of POEA processing fee

It is important to note that you do the medical first before you get the insurance and pay the OWWA fee and POEA processing fee.

After you have accomplished the requirements for phase two, POEA will make your OEC and will give it to you on the same day you have submitted all the requirements and paid all the fees. You have to make a photocopy of everything and keep it for yourself.

Once you have the OEC, you have to book a flight or your company will book a flight for you, depending on your arrangement. In my case, the company won’t pay for my flight going to Maldives so I have to shoulder the cost myself. Nevertheless, my employer will pay for my return ticket and my flight tickets for my yearly vacation. Most of the companies especially the resort will pay for your flight to and from the Maldives. You have to be clear about it with your employer from the start. Otherwise, the plane ticket is very expensive.

Since the pandemic, there is an additional requirement for you to travel abroad. You will need to take an RT-PCR Test from a DOH-accredited testing center. You need to get the original copy of the swab test result and present it upon checking in at the airport.  If you are traveling on a domestic flight, you need to get a travel permit first from your municipality or police station. You will also need the travel permit upon checking in at the airport. Within 24 hours before your flight to the Maldives, you have to register on Maldives’ health declaration website called Imuga. This is the link: https://imuga.immigration.gov.mv/. Once you are on this website you select “Traveller Health Declaration” and click on it. Also before the day of your flight, make sure you install the Traze mobile app on your mobile phone to get a QR code. Make a screenshot of the QR code. You will need to show this upon your international flight.

At Manila International Airport while waiting for my international flight via Emirates to Dubai. It is a connecting flight to the Maldives.
Inside the Emirates plane going to Dubai connecting flight to the Maldives.
At Dubai International Airport waiting for my flight going to Maldives via FlyDubai (a partner airline of Emirates).
Riding the FlyDubai plane (a partner of Emirates) going to the Maldives.

Upon arrival in the Maldives, you will need to take a 14-day home quarantine in your accommodation then you will need to undergo an RT-PCR test before you can start working.

My first day at Male City since my arrival.
14 days home quarantine at my accommodation at Male City.

So there you have it, the step-by-step guide on how to work in the Maldives as a direct hire. I hope this will be a big help to all our fellow kababayans who wish to work in the Maldives. Do not be afraid. Pray always. Ask for God’s guidance. He will guide you and protect you. God bless you.

The Philippines, a small country in Southeast Asia is a haven for foreign retirees. Many of them settled here with their family and are happily living here for a long time.

Here are 7 reasons why foreigners chose to retire in the Philippines.

1. The Filipino people.

A Filipino family. (Photo by Migs Reyes from Pexels)

The number one reason why foreigners chose to stay for good in the Philippines is because of its people. Filipinos are warm, loving, and hospitable. They have close family ties and they respect the elders. Most Filipinos like to sing and dance. They like to entertain their guests with music. Aside from this, Filipinos are fluent in speaking and writing in English making it easy for them to talk and understand the foreigners.

2. Low cost of living

A busy street in one of the cities of the Philippines. (Photo by Marfil Graganza Aquino from Pexels)

With their monthly pension, foreigners can comfortably retire in the Philippines. If they live the locals, eat like the locals they can save a lot of money. With 1,000 Philippine Pesos or USD 20, they can dine in a decent restaurant good for two people. The Philippines has plenty of cheap vegetables and meat. One can buy plenty of it in the supermarket. Transportation is also cheap in the Philippines. Regarding real estate, the cost will depend on the location of the property. If you buy it in a commercial area or within the city, it is expensive but if you buy a land or house and lot in the province you can find one at a lower cost.

3. The food

There is no denying that Filipino food is one of the best tasting foods in the world. When a person thinks of Filipino food these foods come into mind: crispy and juicy lechon baboy (roasted pig), kare-kare, bulalo, balbacua, kinilaw, afritada, pinakbet, pancit, taho, and many more. Every Filipino household has its specialty in making these foods. If you are a guest in a Filipino house, be prepared to taste at least one of these foods serve by the house owner.

4. Beautiful and natural tourist destinations.

El Nido, Palawan, Philippines. (Photo by Simon Clayton from Pexels)

From world-class pristine and crystal clear beach, waterfalls, mountains, and forests, the Philippines have plenty of these to offer for tourists. Famous tourist destinations are Palawan, Boracay, Cebu, Batanes, Baguio, and Bohol. There are many least known destinations but equally stunning and breathtaking views. Some of these are Camiguin, Zamboanga, Siquijor, and Bukidnon. The Philippines has plenty of options for tourists to choose from.

5. Rich culture and heritage.

The Philippines is a mix of different tribes and has many different languages. Also, it has long been influenced by Spanish, Chinese, and Americans during the old days. It has adapted its beliefs and traditions from these countries as well. Today, foreigners can see some beautiful architectures and celebrations that date back to the earlier days of Philippine history.

6. The Filipina.

The women of the Philippines is called a Filipina. They are known for their beauty, gracefulness, and loyalty. Filipinas are also known to be caring and loyal to their spouses. Many foreigners choose a Filipina for their wife and settle in the Philippines.

7. The weather.

The Philippines has two seasons: the wet and dry season. It is a tropical country and the weather is mostly warm and humid. Sometimes there is a storm or typhoon in some parts of the country but mostly it is nice sunny weather throughout the year. Most foreigners prefer this tropical country to their home country which is cold and most of the time covered with snow.

Whatever reasons the foreigners might have for living in the Philippines, this country has a lot more to offer and will continue to emerge as the fastest-growing country in Southeast Asia.

Many restaurants in Davao City are now open for dine-in customers but they need to follow the health protocols like the temperature check, hand wash, filling out the health declaration form, and sanitizing of hands. There are many restaurants to choose from including Korean restaurants.

I was tired of eating at fast-food chains and want to try something new. I haven’t tried eating in a Korean restaurant so I checked out this new stylish Korean restaurant located at Dona Vicenta Village, J.P. Laurel Ave. (Bajada), Davao City. It is near Chowking Bajada, just across the famous Victoria Plaza Mall. Location wise, it is very accessible by public utility jeepneys. The place is clean and comfy. Most of us Filipinos especially the millennials like Kdrama, Kpop, and Korean dishes that is why Korean restaurant is also a hit in Davao City.

This tiny restaurant called Nuna Korean restaurant has a beautiful stylish interior. I like the white wooden table and chairs and their comfy velvet lounge sofa perfect for Instagram photoshoot.

Their best seller is their Kimchi which is P200 per kilo. Many customers buy their Kimchi for takeout. This Korean food is said to strengthen the immune system because it is made from vegetables. Sadly I cannot eat spicy foods.

Their foods are somewhat pricey. Be prepared to have a budget not less than P800 for a meal of two. For lunch, we tried Jjageul-i (P260), Bibimpap, and their soup which has large dumplings which are very tasty and good for sharing. Jjageul-i (I don’t know how to pronounce the word) is meaty, soft, and yummy. It is made of pork, potato and spicy soup. One serving is good for sharing.

Patok sa Manok is a home-grown restaurant that started as a “lechon manok stall” and grew to a chain of restaurants in Davao City. Their restaurant at Lanang, Davao City is located beside Waterfront Insular hotel and in front of Fortune Executive Homes. Patok sa Manok restaurant has just reopened its doors to diners after Davao City has eased its quarantine regulations due to COVID 19. It is strictly following the health protocols of the government with a foot bath, health declaration forms, temperature checks, and sanitizers inside their dining area. At the time I dined there, it is only using half of its dining area space to accommodate diners.

The food never fails to please our tastebuds. We went there for lunch and ordered Seafood Roll and Beef Kaldereta. Their Seafood Roll consisted of two crispy and tasty rolls. Their Beef Kaldereta is a large serving and the beef is soft and delicious. They also serve the all-time Fillipino favorite Kare-Kare, Sinigang na Baboy, Crispy Pata, and Lechon Manok. There were only a few customers who dined there during that time.

Aside from the food, what I like about this restaurant is they have a safe parking space for their customers located at the side of their restaurant. I would recommend this restaurant to my family and friends. The food is delicious and parking is easy. They also have takeout food. You should give it a try. On your next trip to Davao City, make Patok sa Manok your food trip destination together with your family, friends or special someone.

The pandemic has greatly affected the tourism industry especially the hotels. In Davao City, hotels have temporarily closed during the lockdown. But since the ease of the city’s quarantine regulation, some hotels including DusitD2 Davao have reopened.

The large and modern swimming pool is the main reason why we chose to stay in this hotel.

DusitD2 Davao is the latest addition to Davao City’s international chain of hotels. It is located at Lanang, Davao City in front of Pampanga Village and beside Lots for Less Lanang. This upscale hotel offers modern and spacious rooms each with a private balcony. It has two restaurants, Benjarong Restaurant and Madayaw Café. This hotel also has a spa.

We went to stay for an overnight on September 19, 2020. We booked a deluxe room with a king-size bed overlooking the city. There were only a few checked-in guests when we arrived. Checking-in was easy and we were ushered right into our room.

The weather was so hot that we thought of booking an overnight stay at Samal Island to get away from the city and go swimming. Samal island is just a few minutes boat ride from Davao City. At first, we are still hesitant that there may be travel restrictions when going there due to the pandemic. So I made some research on what are the requirements to go to Samal Island. It turns out, they only need a QR code from the tourists. They don’t ask for a health certificate or travel authority.

We chose to book at Cavanico Il Mare Resort since it looks nice in their photos and it is cheaper compared to other resorts on the island. We reserved a room by calling their Reservation office. We booked an overnight stay for August 31, 2020. The room was good for two with free breakfast at P2,200. They messaged their email address and account number. To process the booking, they asked for a 50%  downpayment. They processed our QR code within 24 hours and sent it to my email. After I emailed to them the proof of payment, they emailed the QR code. The QR code is required to enter the island. Tourists will need to screenshot their QR code and present it to the security officer at the Sasa Wharf ferry station.

Riding the barge from Sasa Wharf going to Samal Island

On the day of our booking, we went to Sasa Wharf to ride the barge going to Samal. The security checked our QR code. The barge fee is P10 per person. Wearing of face mask and face shield is required to ride the barge. Travel time is only 30 mins. Cavanico has its shuttle service that picked us up from the barge to the resort. From the barge to the resort, travel time is 30 minutes. The weather was warm and sunny, perfect for swimming at the beach.

My one-year work contract with Cocoon Resort Maldives as a resident singer ended in March 2020 but because of the Covid-19 pandemic there was a lockdown and all business establishments and resorts were closed including Cocoon Resort. There were no domestic and international flights. I was supposed to transfer to my new job as a Sales Representative in a furniture company in Male City the next month but the manager called me and informed me that they will temporarily close their office due to the pandemic. I was very disappointed. I was stuck in the island resort of Cocoon for three months with no salary or allowance. The staff of the resort is not allowed to go out of the island except for those who are going home or for vacation. I waited patiently for the repatriation flight back to the Philippines.

The flight back to the Philippines was coordinated by the Philippine Embassy in the Maldives with Ace Travel. It was scheduled for June 10, 2020. I messaged my agent and the HR of Cocoon to include me in the flight. I was so happy I can finally go home.

On the day of our flight, I together with another Filipina staff was taken from the resort to the international airport thru the Cocoon speedboat. Some Filipino staffs from another island were also with us. The travel by speedboat was about two hours and thirty minutes to the international airport.

Due to Coronavirus, quarantine measures are being implemented. People are not allowed to go out of their homes unless it is necessary to avoid the spread of the disease.

Staying at home for a long time can be very boring. Sure you can watch movies on Netflix, be active on social media, play online games, and do Tik Tok but there are better ways to spend your time at home. Here are 12 alternative ways you can do at home to keep boredom away:

I was working as a Marketing Officer in a big transport company in Davao when I read a job posting on social media from my former agent. He posted that he urgently needs a singer in a resort in the Maldives. I became interested since I have worked before in the Maldives twice as a singer in two different resorts. I immediately messaged my former agent and asked about the details of the job. The job looked pretty good and since he already personally knew me, he offered the job to me. I said to him to give me time to think since I already have a permanent job in a company. He said he has no time to wait because it is an urgent job hiring. So after more than a week of thinking I said to myself I have to risk it and grab this opportunity. I messaged my former agent that I will take the singing job in the Maldives. So, after a few negotiations with the salary, he processed my work documents and sent me the work visa and plane ticket. I flew to the Maldives via Singapore on March 29, 2019, and arrived in the Maldives on the next day, March 30. I started singing at Cocoon Resort Maldives on April 1, 2019.

Fast forward this year, 2020 a global crisis has struck because of the COVID-19. It was in the second week of January 2020 that my agent informed me that my singing contract in Cocoon Resort Maldives will end on the last day of February 2020. I told him that my one year contract will finish in March this year not February. He admitted he was mistaken and confirmed that my contract will end on the last day of March. The next day, I immediately began updating my curriculum vitae and cover letter. Then every day I searched and applied for jobs online. My target was a job in other Maldives resorts. But I have no luck and as weeks went by I did not have any success so I tried applying for jobs in Male City, Hulhumale, and other countries as well. I also asked for help from some of my friends in the Maldives. Some companies interviewed me personally in their offices. I also got some interviews online through Skype and phone interviews as well. Finally, I found a job in Male in the third week of February. They asked me when I can start then I told them I can join them in the first week of April after I finished my contract with Cocoon Resort. When the Coronavirus problem started to affect the Maldives, my agent asked me to continue working till March until the situation is back to normal to which I agreed.

The Covid-19 pandemic started to worsen in the second week of March greatly affecting the tourism industry in the Maldives. There was a travel ban with some countries. Flights in and out of the country have been limited.  Cocoon Resort advises the staff to take a 3 months voluntary leave. During their voluntary leave, they will be paid only 50% of their monthly salary with no service charge. On the third week of March, Maldives has closed its international airport because of the global crisis.

Because there were no more guest arrivals, Cocoon Resort released a memo that the resort will temporarily be closed starting April 1 until May 31, 2020, urging the staff to take a voluntary leave. On March 31, the resort bid their farewell to the last guests that stayed on the island. Maldives government has advised the resorts that employees can only leave the resort 14 days after the last guest has left the resort. Cocoon Resort cannot send its foreign staff to their home countries because flights have been canceled and there was a travel ban in the Maldives and many countries as well.

On April 1, 2020, there is no more work on the island. The only thing to do is sleeping, eating, playing games like billiard and badminton, watching movies, and going online on social media. Life has become monotonous and boring doing the same things over and over again. To ease the boredom of everybody, the management has created some activities for the staff like swimming at the pool and fishing. There was also a staff party conducted at the guest bar with DJ music and some beer. Staffs were happy and many were dancing. The management has allowed the staff to swim at the beach in the morning starting from 10 o’clock till 7 p.m.

I find it an opportunity to learn as much as I can for new skills and improve my existing skills. I studied online and take online training. I read books and listen to audio books. I write blogs, make a YouTube channel, edit videos, and create logos. I enjoyed the outdoors a lot. I take advantage of outdoor activities like swimming at the beach and fishing. I also play badminton, billiard and table tennis. Time is precious that is why I don’t want to waste this very precious time that I have.

Time to enjoy the outdoor. Everyday is a new day.

While fishing, we saw a giant manta. What a sight!

On April 12, 2020, Sunday the first batch of Maldivian staff was sent to their residential islands. The next day, April 13, Monday the second batch of Maldivian staff was also sent to their islands. The foreign staffs remaining in the resort including Sri Lankans, Indians, Nepalese, Filipinos, and Bangladeshi people are still waiting for flights to be available to their respective countries.

I messaged the company who hired me regarding any update about my employment with them but they still cannot give me any information. I hope and pray that they will process my working visa before Cocoon Resort will ask me to leave the island.

On June 5, 2020, I was still at Cocoon Resort Maldives waiting for my flight back to the Philippines. I have enlisted my name at the Philippine Consulate of Maldives for the second repatriation flight but there is still no announcement if there will be a second repatriation flight.

Being on the island for a very long time makes me miss the city life so badly. I miss going to the malls, shopping, dining in restaurants, talking to friends, and listening to live music in bars. To keep my sanity, I focus on things that I am thankful for like the beautiful beach, the fresh air, the beautiful flowers and plants around me, and the luxury of time to play and sleep.
